AMPD Case Study: Uncovering Detailed Consumption Habits of Streaming Services Across APAC

The Opportunity

The large mobile-first consumer markets in APAC represent a major battle ground for the global streaming (VOD) players and regional players. As competition increases, and economic headwinds hit streaming platforms, the need to optimise libraries and develop new content that resonates is key to customer acquisition and securing sustainable production pipelines. Yet in APAC there has been an absence of robust measurement solutions for streaming services, particularly at a content (title) level, and limited understanding of consumer dynamics within the marketplace for streaming in general.

AMPD Research, a subsidiary of Media Partners Asia, was approached in 2020 by several media owners to establish a pan-regional continuous streaming media measurement service. AMPD turned to RealityMine as a key technology and data solutions partner to help establish a new measurement solution, with an initial emphasis on mobile devices in Southeast Asia before a potentially much wider rollout across both markets and device types.

The Solution

AMPD Research has leveraged RealityMine’s technology to uncover data-driven insight to the preferences and real-life behaviour of consumers in the world of online video streaming. This has helped clients including Amazon Prime Video, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and regional OTT players to understand detailed consumer behaviour and refine their content strategies.

In order to supplement its own panels and to avoid the huge incremental investment required to expand its market coverage, AMPD Research turned to RealityMine’s Data Marketplace, which enabled an efficient go-to-market strategy, by minimising lead time and implementation challenges associated with building and maintaining bespoke consumer panels. RealityMine’s Data Marketplace provided AMPD Research access to the highest quality panels at a fraction of the cost of building from scratch, while delivering with the best-in-class audience measurement solutions to its clients.

The AMPD service now extends to 50,000 consumers spanning Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom with further markets planned beyond the Asia Pacific region in 2023.
